I hadn't thought that much into the plot, but you make a great point about the Spice: they never show how it's used for space travel, something even Lynch managed to touch upon while keeping the story under 2 hours.
I'm starting to realize the reason why I enjoy part 2 far more than part 1: because part 1 establishes almost nothing of the story's political and diplomatical conundrum, while at least part 2 has things blowing up.
